The Council is backing the Royal British Legion’s call for Hyndburn residents to join a two minute doorstep silence at 11am on 8 November 2020, to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Council Leaders Miles Parkinson OBE said; “This year the arrangements for Remembrance Sunday will be very different due to the restrictions in place as a result of Covid-19. Although there will be no gathering at the memorials across the borough, people can still pay their respects on Remembrance Sunday by standing on their doorsteps at 11am for a 2 minute silence. The start and end of the silence will be signalled by the release of maroon flares across the Borough. The Council and the Royal British Legion would like to encourage as many people as possible to pause at 11 am and reflect on the sacrifices of our service men and women from conflicts past and present.”
For those who would still like to lay a wreath at a memorial, please wait until after 11.30 am but avoid any crowding around memorials. Armistice Day is held on Wednesday 11th November so please remember that wreaths do not just have to be laid on Remembrance Sunday. The Royal British Legion is also suggesting alternative ways of marking the occasion or raising funds, such as a virtual My Poppy Run, or leaving a tribute in their virtual Field of Remembrance.
