BBC Radio Lancashire have unveiled their exciting new kart for the 2023 #AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge, which has been produced by Apprentices at Accrington-based training provider, North Lancs Training Group (NLTG).

Apprentices from NLTG’s Furniture Manufacture Centre of Vocational Excellence have produced a Mario Kart-inspired entry, after listeners of BBC Radio Lancashire’s breakfast show with Graham Liver and Leanne Bayes sent in their suggestions.

Both Graham and Leanne, dressed as Mario and Luigi, will be taking on the challenge of driving ‘Morning Glory II’ at the #AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge on Saturday 26th August in Accrington town centre.

In a fast and frenetic race down the 170-metre-long track, participants will come up against jumps, water pumps, pit lanes and many more surprises along the way.

Graham took part in the event last year alongside Sharon Hartley but is hoping for a much better performance this time out.

Graham said: “This is the first time we have seen Morning Glory II and for me, unlike last year, I have got four wheels which I am delighted about.

“This beautiful machine has been made for us by North Lancs Training Group and I am very excited, Leanne not so much, to drive it down the course at the Soapbox Challenge!”

Gareth Lindsay, Managing Director of NLTG, added: “The Soapbox is fantastic, it is one of the best events of the year, and loads and loads of people come down to Accrington.

“We love being an Accrington company and giving back to the community, so being involved in it and being a big part of it is top of our list for the year.”

The #AmazingAccrington Soapbox Challenge takes place on Saturday 26th August from 10 am-4 pm, and this year will include an interval, where visitors are encouraged to visit local eateries and #ShopLocal while enjoying a fantastic line-up of entertainment including Brazilian-style dancers, a samba band, as well as performances from popular ska band Blowjangles and the Hyndburn Comets Majorettes.

Back by popular demand, The Code Show will return to Accrington Market Hall. A local coding roadshow celebrating how 1980s Britain embraced the home computer – there will be plenty of opportunities to check out some fantastic technology including a Sinclair C5, as well as playing some great games.
