Can you spare an hour to be a part of something amazing, and to help your local community?
On Sunday 24th June from 12:30pm till 3:30pm, a clean-up of the Platt’s Lodge in Accrington will be taking place. Volunteers from Friends of Platt’s Lodges – a group established solely with the aim of cleaning up the lodge – will be heading up the big clean. They are working in conjunction with Ribble Rivers Trust but need more people to join them to remove as much litter and plastic waste from the site as possible.
Maxine Stirzaker, founder of the community group, said:
“It’s heart breaking really to see the state of the lodge now. The litter and plastic waste is harming the wildlife and really unsightly. We are really hoping for the community to step up and help us with this. This will be our third clean up, we’ve removed over 70 bags of rubbish so far from the lodge, free of charge. We just want to make it a place where people from Accrington and beyond can visit and enjoy, again.”
Nikki Holbrook, Globe Enterprises Manager at The Globe Centre which is located nearby, said:
“The Globe Centre is supporting the big clean up of Platt’s Lodge because it will benefit the town as a whole. We are really hoping that other companies in the local area get behind this initiative. The lodge is also in close proximity to Waterside Apartments off St. James Street, so it would be amazing to see residents from there getting involved – if nothing else but to improve their view!”
Friends of Platt’s Lodges are also being supported by local company, Scott Dawson Advertising. Managing Director, Murray Dawson, is Chairman of the #AmazingAccrington initiative. He said:
“I think it’s a fantastic project for the locals within the community to be taking on but it definitely needs more than that. We want to create spaces in Accrington that entice people to visit from outside of the town and to have a beautiful lodge just outside of the town centre next to the council offices that is accessible, clean, friendly to wildlife, and maintained well, will be great for the town. Hopefully sprucing up such spaces will increase visitors and footfall in the town centre as well.”
To take part, just turn up! Platt’s Lodge is located off Ormerod Street and Victoria Street in Accrington, close to Hyndburn Borough Council’s offices and Tesco.
Volunteers will be arriving on Sunday 24th June from 12pm onwards and will be provided with refreshments and rubber gloves. For more information contact Maxine via the Friends of Platt’s Lodges Facebook Group.
