Accrington Stanley Women have announced that MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, Sarah Smith, has signed for the club’s open age development (OAD) team.
The announcement was made before the club’s 6-1 win against Radcliffe FC Women at the Wham Stadium on Sunday.
Sarah attended the special women’s football festival ahead of the game, where she had a go at the club’s ‘roll the dice’ game for the chance to win a brand-new Fiat 500, as well as taking on the ‘beat the goalie’ activity.
The event was hosted as a celebration to commemorate International Women’s Day, which takes place this Saturday.
Stanley Women’s OAD team regularly play matches on Sundays, providing a platform for those wanting to return or start adult football in a fun and inclusive, yet competitive environment.
A football fan herself and having played at a younger age, Sarah is now looking forward to putting her boots on once again and representing the club.
Sami Smithson, Chair of Accrington Stanley Women, said: “We are delighted that Sarah has joined the Accrington Stanley Women family.
“It is a big signing for our OAD team and we are really excited to see what Sarah can bring to the team.”
Sarah Smith, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, said: “As someone who hasn’t played football for a little while, I am very apprehensive but excited about being involved with the squad.
“I couldn’t be more supportive of Accrington Stanley Women and it is great to see local businesses continuing to get behind the club, helping them to thrive.”
