A number of local schoolchildren will take part in an exciting new light event, which takes place in Accrington Town Centre between Friday 25th and Sunday 27th October.

Enlighten will see heritage buildings transformed over the weekend, with incredible light displays and performances taking place.

One of the attractions on the agenda will see local schoolchildren deliver a special performance of spoken word and poetry.

Students from Hyndburn Park Primary School in Accrington, St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Oswaldtwistle and Accrington Woodnook Primary School will take to the stage in Accrington Library on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October at 6pm.

Speaking alongside a special guest speaker, the readings will showcase what the schoolchildren love about Accrington and what they enjoy doing in and around the town.

Those performances will be part of an action packed weekend of free events in Accrington Town Centre, including light displays, workshops, light sculptures, live music, an interactive AR trail, plus much more.

Alongside Accrington Library, the activities and displays will take place inside and outside St James’ Church including the newly renovated Accrington Pals Memorial Garden on Church Street, the Town Hall Ballroom,  inside the Victorian Arcade and inside the Market Chambers. The event is curated by Hyndburn’s Head of Culture & Heritage, Lucy Dusgate.

There is also a ticketed event taking place inside the Accrington Town Hall ballroom. Early bird tickets have already sold out for the Baby Rock Sampler music gig, which will see Liverpool’s queens of electronic pop Stealing Sheep perform. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Blackburn/Accrington-Town-Hall/Baby-Rock-Sampler-Stealing-Sheep-at-Accrington-Town-Hall/40059094/

Visitors to Enlighten are being encouraged to #ShopLocal and to visit local eateries throughout the event, while Accrington Town Hall will be open as a café, offering a variety of food and drink.

Councillor Kimberley Whitehead, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Arts, said: “It is fantastic to be working with local schools and schoolchildren on this exciting project.

“The aim of Enlighten is to not only showcase Accrington’s heritage, but also inspire local people to be creative and showcase their talents. The spoken word and poetry performances align with this perfectly.”

Christina Wilkinson, Headteacher at St Andrew’s CE Primary School, said: “It is a real honour to be invited to take part in this fantastic event. Our students are really looking forward to getting involved and performing at Enlighten.”
