Visitors to the 2023 Accrington Food & Culture Festival will get the opportunity to celebrate The Candy Bomber, Col. Gail Seymour Halvorsen, an American pilot who gained fame for dropping 23 tons of candy to German children during the Berlin airlift of 1948.
At 2 pm, estate agent Pendle Hill Properties will be handing out 250 Hershey bars and 250 parachute men to U12s on a first come, first served basis, to commemorate the Candy Bomber’s 75th anniversary. The attraction will take place next to Hyndburn’s specially commissioned Town & District Transport Trust gold Coronation bus.
The giveaway will come following a spectacular war re-enactment in the grounds of St James’ Church (1 pm) and a Spitfire flypast over Accrington town square at 1:40 pm.
This will be the second time that Pendle Hill Properties have celebrated the iconic Candy Bomber, having welcomed over 1,000 visitors to their attraction at Padiham on Parade in June 2022, where they also handed out Hershey bars and parachute men.

The Accrington Food & Culture Festival takes place on Saturday 3rd June from 10am-4pm in Accrington Town Centre.
